Anxiolysis - Minimal Sedation

Anxiolysis, or minimal sedation, can be achieved with a combination of nitrous oxide (aka “laughing gas”) and oxygen. Nitrous oxide can offer a mild calming effect as you breathe it through your nose. Nitrous oxide is very safe and has a quick onset and offset, allowing you to drive yourself to and from your appointment.

Oral Sedation – Moderate Sedation

With oral moderate sedation, you will be able to respond to our team’s verbal and tactile stimulation and also maintain your own airway, breathing, and cardiovascular function throughout your procedure. You will be very calm and relaxed, and may also feel tired and less “with it” overall. Some patients do fall asleep and remember very little from the procedure, however it is important to note that everyone responds to these medications differently.

A prescription will be called into your preferred pharmacy for you to pick up a few days ahead of your scheduled appointment. The medications are taken, per instructions, prior to coming in for the procedure. You can eat and drink prior to oral sedation. A trusted friend, family member, or other responsible adult must bring you to and from your appointment.

IV Sedation – Moderate Sedation

Dr. Diehl and Dr. Coleman have extensive training in the administration of IV moderate sedation. IV sedation is very safe and effective for minimizing dental anxiety. While we don’t anticipate any complications during your procedure, the doctors are also trained in advanced airway and cardiac care, as well as management of other medical emergencies.

With IV moderate sedation, you will be able to respond to our team’s verbal and tactile stimulation and also maintain your own airway, breathing, and cardiovascular function throughout your procedure. An IV will be started at the beginning of your appointment. Medications will be administered through your IV and gradually titrated to effect. You will be monitored throughout the entire procedure and recovery to continually assess your blood pressure, breathing, oxygen levels, and cardiac function. You will need to fast for at least 8 hours prior to the procedure. A trusted friend, family member, or other responsible adult must bring you to and from your appointment.
